Carrot – Mokum Seeds

Often called the most delicious fresh carrot, this early Nantes-type carrot is crisp and sweet to munch on. Bright orange roots that measure about 6-8” at maturity have beautiful green tops that are shorter than most carrot varieties. Because it matures quickly, ‘Mokum’ carrots are great for spring and summer planting.

When to Plant in Spring:

Planting: Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, planting about 4 seeds per inch. Thin to about 1-4 inches apart. Sow every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest.

For Ground Plot Planting: Plant in rows spaced 18” apart. Thin plants to stand 1” apart. Packet will cover 130’ row.

For Raised Bed Planting: Thin plants to stand 2 – 4” apart. Packet will cover 25 – 90 sq. ft.

Care: Work in plenty of composted organic matter to your soil to maintainloose soil conditions and in order to encourage uniform root growth.

Germination: 6 – 21 days

Days to Maturity: 54 (can also be harvested at 30 – 40 for smaller size)

Preferences: Plenty of water, full sun, well-draining soil

Harvest: Make carrots easier to unearth by sprinkling water on the soil to make it moist. Pull carrots out by their tops using a gentle twisting motion. In areas with colder winter seasons, carrots can be kept in the ground after first frost, but should be harvested before the ground completely freezes.

Special Instructions/Tips: When plants have 7-10 leaves, create 1-2 inch high hills of soil around the crown to prevent green shoulders.

• Early Greek and Roman writings refer to edible white roots that some believe to be carrots, but others dispute this claim and say they could have been parsnips. The earliest vegetable known to definitely be a carrot dates back to 10th century Persia.

Mokum Carrot Cheddar Balls
4 ounces cold cream cheese (½ bar)
1 cup yellow cheddar cheese, finely grated
1 Mokum carrot, finely grated

In a medium bowl, with a wooden spoon, combine cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and carrot. With moistened hands, gently form 12 balls, each equal to 1 level tablespoon of mixture. Serve or refrigerate, covered with plastic wrap, up to 2 days.
