If you are not as ambitious as us (hiking the majority of the Roller Coaster in one day) Route 605 (Morgans Mill Road) is a good midpoint for completing half of this section. Beautiful day. Hiking – Appalachian Trail – Snickers Gap to Ashby Gap (The Roller Coaster) Distance: 12.5 miles. The good news for Southbound hikers is that the terrain after the Roller Coaster to Ashby Gap is much flatter and not terribly rocky. The trail also “narrows” from Morgans Mill Road. Help keep our trails and parks open during COVID-19 by committing to social distancing. What a treat for thru-hikers! Excellent hike with nothing but roots and rocks. The run may also be run north-to-south or, for the more ambitious, as a tough 27 mile out-and-back with more than 7500 feet of ascent. Boasts overlooks and creek crossings. Snickers Gap has a large parking area, but it can fill up quickly.

That speaks to it’s peacefulness I suppose. Great hike during COVID social distancing. As other have mentioned, recommend parking on Liberty Hill Lane which will save having to cross a busy highway. Bear's Den to Ashby Gap is a 13.5 mile lightly trafficked point-to-point trail located near Bluemont, Virginia that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding.

Other than that, it was a trail worth hiking. Shadier and more difficult, so gets your heart racing if you’re looking for a workout. Aptly named, immediately after passing through Bear’s Den Lookout, we had our only black bear sighting of the day; probably a juvenile male that quickly ran away from us (maybe back to Bear’s Den?) Parking in the lot that the directions take you to is only accessible to SUVs and Trucks. We didn’t detour to the Rod Hollow Shelter as my hiking partner suffered a knee injury (go figure: the Roller Coaster is rated the 3rd hardest section on the AT).
