The attributes of Ephraim and Manasseh reflect their parent Joseph. There is so much to wonder and marvel at in the Torah portion of Va Yechi (Genesis 47:28-50:26). Please take note of the order given to Joseph’s two sons in verse 1. He takes the sharp knife and cuts away the branches and the excess growth. Ephraim and Manasseh, or Manasseh and Ephraim… both these tribes (whether their name placement in the scriptures is first or second) offer powerful insights for us to use today on how to contend with this world, how to immerse in Torah and how to be a benefit to the whole nation of Israel – together in unity.

Let’s begin with Manasseh, which means “forgetting.” What did Joseph forget? 10-11. This is the story of Joseph and his two sons (Manasseh and Ephraim) visiting and attending to Jacob, who was sick. Joseph always gave the glory to God.

This time it is Ephraim first and then Manasseh second (verse 5). Jacob said of his son Joseph, “Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well” (Genesis 49:22).

Manasseh means “forgetting” and Ephraim means “fruitful.” Why did Joseph choose those names, and what do those names mean to us today? Then he was arrested for a crime he did not commit and was sent to prison.
His second son was Ephraim—“God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.” The name Ephraim means “fruitful,” and certainly God did make Joseph fruitful in the land of Egypt.
Think of how Joseph suffered! The reason for these names is given in Genesis 41:25-51: “And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, for God, saith he, hath made me to forget all my toil and all my father’s house.
He knows the way that we take, and He can make that way bring glory to His name.
Firstborn sons are supposed to receive the right hand blessing.
