The Javelin is a "fire-and-forget" missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self guidance. The Support Company contains the heavy weapons the Battalion Commander needs to support the Rifle Companies and complete the Battalion mission.
The weapon was designed by Malcolm Cooper and is based on a sporting rifle design. There was no J Company: the letter J was traditionally not used because in 18th and 19th century old-style type, the capital letters I and J looked alike, and were therefore easily confused with one another. A weapons company, sometimes called a manoeuvre support company, is a company-sized military unit attached to an infantry battalion to support the rifle companies of the battalion.
In the United States Army, a battalion is a unit composed of a headquarters and two to six batteries, companies, or troops. The role of the Recce Platoon is provide accurate and timely information by day or night, in all weather, in all phases of war.
The United States Navy has construction battalions and navy cargo handling battalions. These new combined arms battalions are modular units, each consisting of a headquarters company, two mechanized infantry companies, two tank companies, and a forward support company attached from the battalion's parent brigade support battalion. Canadian battalions are generally commanded by lieutenant-colonels, though smaller reserve battalions may be commanded by majors. A British battalion in theatre during World War II had around 845 men; as of 2012, a British battalion had around 650 soldiers. Each platoon (including the company headquarters) should have two tow-bars to enable each section to conduct self-recovery.
Typically, the 81mm Mortar Platoon will remain under the control of the battalion commander, regardless of the nature of the operation. Each assault platoon currently has five vehicles: four armed HMMWVs and one command HMMWV.
A battalion in the Indian Army consists of four rifle companies. The day sight is equipped with x 4 magnification and the night sight with x 4 and x 9 magnification optics. In addition to the battlefield advantages, dropping one vehicle per platoon (four per company) would significantly reduce the costs associated with its maintenance and upkeep and would also reduce the airlift requirements in the case of rapid deployment.
Marine infantry regiments use battalion and company designations as described above under World War II, with company letters D, H, and M not normally used but rather held in reserve for use in augmenting a fourth rifle company into each battalion as needed. Battalions are tactical and administrative organizations with a limited capability to plan and conduct independent operations and are normally organic components of brigades, groups, or regiments. The command HMMWV is designated as the platoon leaderâs vehicle; however, this doesnât pass the common sense test. The term squad should be reserved for that of only dismounted maneuver elements consisting of two or more fire teams. Also found in Support Company are the battalion commander's reconnaissance assets, the Recce Platoon. The battalion also possesses a weapons company of three platoons which are equipped with 120mm heavy mortars and anti-armor weapons.
Recce soldiers serve as the battalion commanders' 'eyes and ears' and can operate up to 10km forward of the battalion gathering information about terrain, routes, and the enemy and feeding it back to battalion headquarters to enable decision making and planning. The 81mm Mortar long barrel with the C2 AI Sight Unit and its ammunition, together with the Morfire Fire Control Computer make this equipment among the most modern and accurate in service anywhere in the world. In the Irish Army a battalion is an infantry combat unit. However, each section has two squads each, and herein is where the confusion lies. Many of these conversations have been on preparing for both conventional conflict as well as counterinsurgency (COIN) operations. To help lessen the burden, each platoon should: shift one Soldier (E4) to the company headquarters, recode one Soldier (E3) to a staff sergeant to make another section sergeant, and recode one Soldier (E4) to a sergeant to create a dismounted team leader. A battalion's subordinate companies and their platoons are dependent upon the battalion headquarters for command, control, communications, and intelligence, and the battalion's service and support structure.
