Steve Coogan: Two sides of the British character.
If you’re used to a working-class culture, they use that word all the time. And sort of exaggerate or give platform to those aspects of me that I think aren't very nice but are sort of more interesting. And I think he introduced himself to Rob, but I do that thing, yeah yeah, it's Kareem. What you think of is Beyonc or Kate Moss and the empowered women's faces you see in the shop. So we borrowed a little bit of that shape and it kind of felt like it'd be natural kind of a shape to sort of end the saga of doing The Trip. Steve Coogan: People talk about lots of stuff that seemed untenable 20 years ago, gender, politics and the whole Me Too movement, and diversity and the environment. Donald Trump has elements of that. Yeah.
Michael Winterbottom: Yeah, we finished it and it's coming out quite soon I think.
MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM ON THE SET OF THE TRIP. To have that refugee element of the movie, was that always the plan or did that kind of grow out of the setting? Steve Coogan: Well, we bump into him in The Trip. STEVE: That’s probably the hardest acting job, to pretend you’ve got a lion in front of you and you’ve just got a guy in lycra are holding a chrome sphere. And also because it was about part of my life, because I grew up in Manchester and that the world that the movie is set in was a world that I was tangentially involved in, in my youth. MICHAEL: For Rich McCreadie and Philip Green. Well, Rich McCreadie is a slightly different person, an odd person so far as he actually did have a slightly privileged background, but sometimes these businessmen to me seem street smart, like they try rough up their accent up a bit. At one point there's a hilarious thing with James Blunt where he shows up literally serenading McCready and his wife played by Isla Fisher. And I read that you approached Michael, is that right? He’s going to get with all his celebrity friends. So what I do externally is I like to look different than they I in the mirror and I put in these super white teeth and have this tan and my blow-dried hair, and I look in the mirror and I go, that guy looks like a bit of a joke, but I think I know who he is. So the film constantly has internal contradictions, which is what's wonderful about it. Steve Coogan: Well, I'm not really a method actor. Steve Coogan: Ironically, Sasha's wife played my wife in the movie. In America, about 97 or 98% of all the clothes sold in America are made outside the US. And I've worked with Michael, you know, half a dozen times before that on different film projects.
I think when you adapt books, you’re thinking about the balance between how much you’re trying to make the film faithful to the book and how you’re just trying to make a film. But I’m sure there is someone. And of course everyone can understand the adrenaline rush of people whose job is to make money, and that's an end in and of itself.
