It's more like a portrayal of Romney as an all-around great family man, politician and people person who has no flaw other than loving his fellow man too much.
Its January 24 debut on Netflix should generate enthusiastic word-of-mouth, and it wouldn't be a bad film to revisit in the heat of 2016.
Unsurprisingly, this documentary provided me with a different take on a man who's political party I don't necessarily side with, but have never found him to be in the same category of other hated Republican candidates, due to his more moderate-centrist approach.
He loves his kids. If liberal viewers immediately assume this means he's a self-deluded man who is only now contemplating the possibility of defeat, they'll spend much of the next 91 minutes learning they were wrong. there's no point to a doc like this if they're going to let the chronology of the campaign shape the narrative, and simply serve it up to you. An intriguing look at Mitt Romney's campaigning efforts starting from his decision to run during the 2008 election, all the way through the 2012 election. Rather inoffensive and completely bipartisan look at Mitt Romney's two separate unsuccessful presidential campaigns and what went on behind the scenes during those roughly 8 years.
Though the film leaves some questions unanswered, it offers up five interesting revelations about the Republicans’ failed 2012 presidential candidate. That small moment is one of many caught by the unobtrusive camera of Greg Whiteley, who tailed Romney over six years and two campaigns.
He agonized about becoming a punchline. In the end, we are left with the sense that Mitt is a genuinely good guy, a shrewd politician, and probably completely out of touch with what real every-day American life is like. After his re-energizingly successful first debate with President Obama, the Romneys jubilate in private (“He just absolutely crushed it!”).
The movie inadvertently bolsters one of the most devastating critiques of Romney’s candidacy from Republican and Democratic opponents: that there wasn’t much conviction driving his quest for the White House other than his belief that he would be a great president. But Mitt, the documentary premiering on Netflix today, captures him composing the speech and reading bits of it aloud, aboard his campaign plane, his work interrupted by his running mate, Paul Ryan, with an upbeat report from an election-eve campaign swing through Ohio.
It’s true: Mitt Romney did not prepare a concession speech until well into election night when it was clear he was going to lose, and probably lose badly. “Sitting presidents,” he reminded his inner circle, “get crushed in the first debate … and then they come back prepared.”. Fear and loathing on the campaign trail? A filmmaker is granted unprecedented access to a political candidate and his family as he runs for President. Well, "focus" is a strong word. All rights reserved. but it suffers from a similar problem to FRUITVALE – even though i didn't like Romney before i saw the film (as opposed to Oscar Grant, whom i knew little about beyond the circumstances of his death), i didn't need to be convinced that he was a human. There are lots of cons, which Romney duly notes on a legal pad, but the family also seems earnest in its willingness to support an important effort they feel will cost them on a personal level. I never wanted to watch this movie, although I'd heard good things about it - that it *humanizes* the guy, shows what he's *really* like apart from the media, etc.
