Ramapo Lake Natural Area (1,417 acres) This natural area offers spectacular views from numerous rock outcroppings and ledges and rewards those who accept the challenge of the winding hiking trails and rocky terrain that comprise most of the site. Soon, another gravel road joins from the left. A 120-acre clearwater mountain lake provides an excellent spot for fishing and birdwatching. *The The New Jersey Walk Book calls it “Foxcroft Mansion” (p.93), and online sources refer to it as Van Slyke Castle. Just past the southern end of the lake, about a mile from the dam, the road reaches a T intersection, where you should turn right. Very pleasant walk, especially the views of the lake on a warm summer morning!

Here, you should turn left, crossing the dam of Ramapo Lake. Our campsite secluded but close to everything. Follow this blue-blazed side trail for 500 feet to a rock outcrop overlooking the lake. The road proceeds through dense vegetation, crosses a causeway over an arm of the lake, and passes a swamp to the left and several interesting rock outcrops. Just ahead on the left is the Ramapo Mountain State Forest parking area. The trail will circle around the ruins, then turn left towards another viewpoint, marked by an old stone water tower.
You’re now heading north through dense vegetation, paralleling the western shore of Ramapo Lake. Lots of rocky paths along the way with some nice cushiony ground in spots that were very alleviating to our feet. At the southern end of the parking area, a triple black-square-on-blue blaze marks the start of the Ramapo Lake Spur.
