Church Street, Wymondham NR18 0PH England, In 1107, William d’Aubigny founded a Benedictine monastery in Wymondham as a ‘daughter house’ of the great St Alban’s Abbey. When youâre at the Abbey, itâs only a very short walk to the middle of the town, or you could just pop into the Green Dragon pub (below) which is the oldest pub in Wymondham, and almost next door to the Abbey.
The staff are friendly and helpful and helped to make our visit even more enjoyable. The abbey is a gem to behold. With its two towers and incredibly ornate altar piece (a real WOW factor which you can only understand by seeing it), this is a church that is still very much in use today. The rich history of the Abbey means that your worship here is rooted in that of many faithful generations before you. Moving into the south aisle, if you look at the floor just in front of the shop counter, you’ll see what remains of the outside wall of the original aisle.
As you walk down the Norman Nave, ahead of you at the altar is this incredible altar screen, or reredos. Wymondham Abbey (pronounced Windum) is the Anglican parish church for the town of Wymondham in Norfolk, England.
Wymondham Abbey unusually has two towers, one at the west end, the other over the crossing. so whether you're on a walk by yourself or with your family.
